Industrial MSc and PhD Theses
Enterprises can offer scholarships so that students complete their MSc/PhD theses working on a given specific challenge proposed by the enterprise. Our industrial partners can also benefit from the Industrial Doctorates Programme. Our group offers support in the development of smart solutions for complex real-life problems in the areas of logistics, transportation, and production as well as in the areas of distributed and parallel computing (including cluster, grid and cloud computing). Our smart solutions combine different analytics techniques, including: optimization, computer simulation, and data analysis/mining.
Examples of Industrial PhD Projects
- Smart solutions for gas delivery using a fleet of vehicles: This project consists in the optimization of the distribution process of different types of gases, from several depots to the final customers, using a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles. We design intelligent algorithms able to find optimal or near-optimal vehicle routing plans for this rich and real-life vehicle routing problem, so that the distribution costs and CO2 emissions are minimized.
- Waste collection management in smart cities: The goal of this project is to design efficient routing strategies in real-time for waste collection, taking advantage of the online information provided by sensors installed in the containers and also considering real-time traffic information.
- Smart solutions for integrated vehicle packing and routing: In this project we develop intelligent algorithms for optimizing the distribution of products when not only the routing plan is important, but also the loading and packing of products inside the delivery vehicles has to be considered, thus minimizing the total distribution costs and time.
- Smart solutions for delivering in-house services using shared vehicles: This project consists in the optimization of the pick-up and delivery processes of agents in the healthcare and sanitary sectors (e.g., nurses, doctors, housekeepers, etc.) offering in-house services. Our algorithms allow for pick-up and delivery synchronization, thus allowing the mobility of these agents using a fleet of shared taxi vehicles.

Our group is always open to become a scientific partner in different R&D projects, both at domestic and international levels (e.g. Horizon 2020, etc.), related to the development of smart solutions in the areas of logistics, transportation, and production as well as in the areas of distributed and parallel computing (including cluster, grid and cloud computing).
